” identity, place, layer, ancient artifact, for me are not a limit but ingredients to design, it is the continuity and persistence that interests me “

Lorena Luccioni | Studio di Architettura is an Italy-based architecture practice that has been working for 35 years in the public works sector and in the private sector, dealing with new buildings and restauration of the existing building heritage, from the conservative restoration of monumental heritage to the architectural and urban conversion or replacement in heavily historicized fabrics. The design approach is the same at any scale: from the knowledge and peculiarities of space the project adapts to the spirit of the place, never neutral, seen as a sort of “opposite” with which to come to terms to transform the existing.
Lorena Luccioni graduated in Architecture in Florence in 1984 with the highest marks and honors. She concentrated on Urban Planning from 1985 to 1991 and followed this with teaching and research at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence. From 1993 to 2004 she collaborated with the Faculty of Architecture of Ascoli Piceno, and in 1996 she was awarded the academic title of Cultore della Materia; from 1998 to 2003 she was a lecturer at the Laboratory of Design. Her professional career began in Florence in 1985 and in collaboration with the architect G. Balli signs two urban-scale projects in the field of public housing: 176 apartments and collective spaces for the PEEP of Badia a Settimo, Scandicci (Florence) and 181 apartments in the new district of Le Piagge Centrali in Florence. In 1989 she won the competition to enlarge the Florence-Peretola Airport. In 1991 she opened her own studio which worked on public and private building projects and the planning of public spaces. She was invited to exhibit her projects and prototypes in various exhibitions: for a ‘Loft all’Italiana’ at the Salone del Mobile of Milan in 1984, for the ‘Casa Neoclettica’ in ‘Abitare il Tempo’, Verona, for Oliko with the Gil chair at the Salone del Mobile of Milan in 1994, for ‘Bagno Senza Confini’ with a reading bench with toilets at the Salone del Mobile of Milan in 1998, at Pesaro in the Fish Market for ‘Usi e Costumi’ and at Jesi for ‘Bagni dell’Adriatico’.
In 1990 she met Cristiano Toraldo di Francia (1941-2019), founder with Adolfo Natalini of the radical group Superstudio in Florence, who later became her husband. Together they sign the bus station in Macerata and the restyling of the FFSS station in Ancona, they work at the PRG in Tropea and the projects for the Serraglio in Prato, the seafront in Livorno, the Torraccia area in Pesaro, while continuing in individual professional paths.
